James M. Mets, is a founding partner of Mets, Schiro & McGovern, LLP. He concentrates his practice in representing both public and private sector unions in all aspects of labor-management relations, with a particular emphasis on public sector collective negotiations.

Leonard C. Schiro

Leonard C. Schiro, is a founding partner of the firm and has spent his entire legal career in the field of Labor and Employment Law. 

Mr. Schiro is a member of the New Jersey Bar Association Labor and Employment Law Section, as well as the AFL-CIO LLC. Furthermore, he is also a member of the State Policemen’s Benevolent Association (PBA) Legal Protection Plan.

Mr. Schiro is an adjunct Professor for Rutgers University (2002 – Present) and currently teaches Labor Relations in Professional Sports, which examines the history and unique laws governing labor unions and owners in MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL. The course includes mock contract negotiations in an NFL setting.

Mr. Schiro also specializes in Fund representation providing legal representation to various trust funds including pension, health and welfare, annuity, education and apprentice funds – providing innovative cost saving measures for various funds as well as collections, management of claims for mass torts, representation of trustees on going compliances.

Mr. Shiro has helped shape the laws concerning labor unions and employee rights with pivotal cases, including his Supreme Court victory in IFPTE Local 196 v. New Jersey Highway Authority.  He has also served as a Contract Advisor for the National Football League Player’s Association.

Mr. Schiro is admitted to practice law in New Jersey State and Federal Courts.

McGovern, Esq. is a partner of the Firm and brings many years of experience in government to his practice of labor law.  Mr. McGovern served on the Governor’s Council on the Prevention of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities and the New Jersey Brain Injury Alliance Children’s and Adolescent Committee. 

Mr. McGovern’s practice is primarily devoted to representing public employees on the State and Local level.  This involves negotiating contracts with public employers, enforcing those contracts through binding arbitration, filing and litigating cases before the Public Employment Relations Commission, and appearing in court as necessary to protect the statutory rights of labor.  A large part of his practice also involves providing legal counseling to clients, including short and long term strategic planning designed to improve outcomes and reduce costs.

ASSOCIATES

Brian J. Manetta

Brian J. Manetta is an associate of the firm. Mr. Manetta received his J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law, where he received a Dean’s Scholarship and was the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Sports and Entertainment Law. Mr. Manetta graduated with a degree in history from Ithaca College. While an undergraduate, Mr. Manetta was a four-year varsity letter winner on Ithaca College’s football team.

Mr. Manetta regularly appears before the following:

  • Federal and State Courts;
  • National Labor Relations Board;
  • New Jersey Civil Service Commission;
  • New Jersey Public Employment Relations Commission;
  • Boards of the New Jersey Public Employees Retirement System; and
  • New Jersey Police and Fire Retirement System.

In addition to the practice of law, Mr. Manetta also teaches Employment Law and Employee Relations in the Entertainment Industry at Rutgers University.

Nicholas G. Kiriakatos

Nicholas received his B.A., magna cum laude, from Rutgers University – New Brunswick in 2015 and his J.D. from Rutgers Law School – Newark in 2018. While in law school, Nicholas interned for the Rutgers Office of the Senior Vice President and General Counsel and the Office of the Public Defender. During his 3L year, he participated in the Criminal and Youth Justice Clinic representing juveniles in matters involving reconsideration of sentence as well as adults charged with Disorderly Persons Offenses.

Following law school, Nicholas completed a post-graduate clerkship with the Honorable John I. Gizzo, J.S.C. Nicholas is also certified by the Administrative Office of the Courts to mediate small claims, landlord/tenant, and Special Civil Part disputes.

Nicholas is a member of the New Jersey Bar.

Suzanne M. Brennan

Suzanne M. Brennan is an associate of the firm. Ms. Brennan graduated from Villanova University with a B.A. in Philosophy and earned her Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School. Ms. Brennan started her legal career in criminal defense. While she still serves as Municipal Public Defender for Howell Township, she has developed her skills in labor and employment law and represents individuals as well as collective bargaining units in arbitrations and other job-related matters. 

Ms. Brennan has consistently volunteered her time in a multitude of capacities including serving as a Chairperson for Pennsylvania Special Olympics Fall Festival, providing legal assistance through Massachusetts Tenants Organization to individuals struggling with poor living conditions, and serving two terms as a Certified Board Member on the Howell Township Board of Education. Most recently, Ms. Brennan was appointed to the Board of Trustees for Brookdale Community College and sits as its Vice Chair.
